First appearance: Black Christmas (1974)

Something not nice is happening at a small sorority house near the campus of a Canadian college just before Christmas holidays ...

One of the first major Slasher movies and the inspiration for the film Halloween!

Jake

First appearance: Twin Dragon Encounter (1986)

Unfortunately since I haven't seen Twin Dragon Encounter I'm not sure what it was about. However I did see the sequel "Dragon Hunt." That one was about Jake gathering a bunch of mercenaries on an island and making them fight and hopefully kill the Mcnamara brothers (Canada's premier twin martial artists) to get revenge for whatever happened in the previous movie. Probably something to do with losing his hand since the movie starts with that.

Jake's army consists of some trappers, a beast master, a guy too stupid to feel pain, some ninjas and a bunch of paramilitary guys. Violence ensues!

Unfortunately I couldn't find a trailer for this slice of Maple Syrup Martial Madness.

Darryl Revok

First appearance: Scanners (1981)

Turns out there's a real weird birth defect associated with the old analgesic Ephemerol. Psychic powers! Now there's two groups of people looking for these psychics, known as Scanners. One is ConSec and it's owner Dr. Paul Ruth, the guy who invented Ephemerol and tested it on his wife,  who is hoping to train these psychics to uses their powers for espionage. The other is lead by Darryl Revok, a scanner, who's using his company Biocarbon Amalgamate to send more Ephemerol to pregnant women in hopes of creating an army of psychic babies! Can former bum and troubled Scanner, Cameron Vale, help ConSec stop Revok from creating an army of fellow Scanners?
Most people know it as "That movie with the exploding head."
Another strange Canadian sci-fi/horror flick from director David Cronenberg from the 1980s. A little slow in parts but worth seeing for its strange mix of spy and monster movie conventions.
I think it might be my favourite Cronenberg movie.

Zap Rowsdower

First appearance: The Final Sacrifice (1990)

A young man, Troy, continues his father's quest to discover the lost city of Xiox! On the run from hooded cult members, he takes refuge in the back of a crummy pick up truck. The truck belongs to the impressively named Zap Rowsdower, a down on his luck former cult member (spoiler, sorry). Together this team sets out to avenge the death Troy's father, find the lost city of Xiox, redeem Zap Rowsdower, and save the world?

This weird, no budget Canadian adventure film received attention from the fantastic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 exposing the world to the incredible mulleted hero Zap! I'd love to see the movie un"riffed" just for fun. Normally I'd include the trailer for the movie with this little write up, unfortunately the movie isn't that popular or something so I can't find a trailer. I highly recommend you check out the MST3K episode, I think its one of their best.

An alcoholic werewolf who's also an officer of the law. Can Lou meld all the aspects in his life a be a better man? Better wolf man?

Max Renn

First appearance: Videodrome (1983)

Since I've been mixed up with the whole BODY/MIND/CHANGE POD (PERSONAL–ON–DEMAND) thing I've been revisiting the works of David Cronenberg. Videodrome's a really weird movie. Really weird.
Its the touching tale of a guy who works for a TV station looking for new programming to keep people watching the channel. He stumbles across a TV signal broadcasting a show called VIDEODROME. Since the show seems to just be about torture murder and sex he figures it would be perfect for the Canadian TV station he works at. Unfortunately after watching the show he finds he's beginning to experience a bunch of weird things. First he's having violent hallucinations next he starts developing a weird rash on his stomach. What could it all mean and how is it linked to the intercepted TV signal? And how was he on a talk show with a man who had been dead for a year?

Manborg

First appearance: Manborg (2011)

A soldier is killed during the Hell Wars and is brought back to life in Mega Death City in the future as man kind's only hope (?), MANBORG! Together with #1 Man, Justice and Mina he faces Count Draculon's weird forces in gladiatorial combat until he tires of those "shenanigrams" and brings the fight to Count Draculon himself!

Made for about $1,000, every cent of which show's on screen, the movie is crazy ambitious and extremely fun. Sure it looks like it was made for a thousand bucks but its a million times more fun than half the recent big budget movies I've seen lately. If only all the micro-budget film makers had the kind of imagination and talent the Aston-6 guys.
Oh, and it's a Canadian flick too. Why can't we make more stuff like this in Canada?
I watched twice in a row after blind buying the DVD. I recommend this flick highly.
