Charles Lee Ray

First appearance: Child's Play (1988)

Little Andrew Barkley get's a new best friend for his birthday! Unfortunately his friend may not be as good a guy as it says on the box? Could all the strange things that are happening around the Barkley's have anything to do with the weird stuff Charles Lee "Lakeshore Strangler" Ray was saying as he died in that toy store?

Interestingly the Second movie in the franchise was released exactly 11 years to the day from the release of the first one. (both on November 9)

Skeletron

First appearance: TurboKid (2015)

The heartwarming tale of a post apocalyptic friendship between a post apocalyptic boy and an extremely friendly post apocalyptic girl. Filled with blood, laughter, blood, horror, arm-wrestling, hideous secrets, refreshing water, blood, BMX bikes, fights, robots, blood and blood.

Broken Head Red Ghost

First appearance: Crimson Peak (2015)

Guillermo Del Toro's gothic romance about a lady who wants to be a writer, a man who needs investor's for his giant clay digging machine, his creepy sister and a house that's slowing sinking into the clay pits under it. Also there's ghosts.
Definitely a movie best seen on the big screen. The costuming and art direction are fantastic, just don't go into it expecting a scare fest, the ads kind of make it will be. That being said there is some particularly grisly things on screen.

Hey you! Yeah, you. are you going to New York Coimic Con? Do you like cool things? If you answered yes to both of these questions you should probably go to New York Comic Con and pick up these limited edition screen prints from the wizards at SpaceLab 9. You'll notice the art has a very Andrew Barr's Monstars flavour to them, that's 'cuz I'm the artist behind the art!

A Collector (I think)

First appearance: Southbound (2015)

Five interlocking tales of horror following the fates of a variety of weary travellers on one of the creepiest stretches of desert highway. In the vein of the original Outer Limits, EC comics, The Twilight Zone etc. from some of the people behind V/H/S, but don't worry this one is fantastic ALL the way through.

Wednesday, September 16, 2015

Dr. Michael Slovak

First appearance: The Mind's Eye (2015)

A drifter with telekinetic powers runs afoul of the head of the Slovak Institute of Psychokinesis, an organization set up to help telekinetically powered individuals. But does the The head of SIP have other more nefarious plans? You can count on that, wouldn't be much of a movie other wise.

This is the second movie from Joe Begos, director of Almost Human.

The Photographers

First Appearance: The Girl in the Photographs

Darcy

First appearance: Green Room (2015)

A punk band runs into trouble at a neo-nazi bar when they accidentally witness something they shouldn't have. Horrifying mayhem ensues.
The movie features Sir Patrick Stewart as the leader of the homicidal skin heads. Anton Yechin stars as a member of the punk band. Interesting as that's two Star Trek alumni in a non-sci-fi movie.

Monday, September 14, 2015

Father

First appearance: Baskin (2015)

Four Turkish Police officers take a trip to one of the creepiest Hells I've seen depicted in a movie. A strange dreamlike movie reminiscent of Lucio Fulci's gory classics The Beyond and City of the Living Dead. May visuals that you'll wish you could forget. The first real horror flick from turkey according to it's director.

Ray Smilie

First Appearance: Devil's Candy (2015)

An artist and his family movie into a new house unfortunately it might not be quite empty and one of it's former residents wants to come home. A genuinely frightening tale of Obsession, possession, Satanic influence, heavy metal and painting.

This may be my favourite movie of 2015. I saw the world premiere during the Midnight Madness program during the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. and I highly recommend you see this movie.

Unfortunately there's no trailer to share just yet.

Bené

First appearance: I am a Knife With Legs (2015)

Someone has declared a fatwa on international pop star Bené. This is the story of how Bené deals with waiting for death to claim him.
One of the funniest movies I've seen in a really long time.
If you get a chance to see it, see it.

Monday, June 22, 2015

Chris Fuchman

First appearance: Father's Day (2011)

A priest, a Backwoods syrup manufacturer (Ahab) with a terrible past (he was framed for killing a man he thought was the "Father's Day Killer") and a young male prostitute (his father was burned to death in front of him by the "Father's Day Killer") embark on an epic quest for vengeance on the man known as the "Father's Day" killer. But is there more to the "Father's Day Killer" than meets the eye?

This is a dark, dark comedy that you probably won't want to watch with your parents or someone you just met. Definitely not a first date movie.
Not to be confused with the Robin Williams movie.

Dracula

First appearance: Dracula (1958)
Dracula's out Drac-ing it up and Dr. Van Helsing's out to put an end to all that.

While I've never been a huge fan of vampire movies I've always really dug the Hammer Dracula series. Christopher Lee is the Best Dracula. This is my little tribute to him. RIP Christopher Lee.

Stephen "Flyboy" Andrews

First appearance: Dawn of the Dead (1978)
A group of people flee the city during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. They find themselves at an abandoned mall and decide to make that their home. Eventually they find that sometimes the worst thing about being a survivor or the zombie apocalypse is being a survivor of the zombie apocalypse. Fortunately they're reminded that there are worse things. Namely motorcycle gangs.

One of the best zombie movies ever made (second only to Day of the Dead and Return of the Living Dead) and the movie that really hammered home the "people are worse than the monster" aspect of the how zombie thing.

Monday, May 4, 2015

Tusken Raider

First appearance: Star Wars (1977)

Along time ago in a galaxy far far away...

A weird mix of Sword and sorcery fantasy and  sci-fi tropes delivers the story of a old religious man convincing a naive farm boy to join a terrorist organization to help destroy a government facility.

The first movie I actually remember seeing in theatres. before all this "Episode 4" and "New Hope" nonsense was attached to it.

Worm eye Zombi

First appearance: Zombi 2 aka Zombie aka Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Woodoo (1979)

A seemingly abandoned boat drifts drifts New York harbor. When the police investigate they find a large rotting man who suddenly attacks them. Meanwhile on an island somewhere some over worked doctors are having to deal with zombies. The daughter of one of the doctors wants to go to the island to find out what happened to her dad. This is the movie with the infamous eyeball impaling and the incredible scene where a zombie fights a shark.
Also, according to his introduction on the blu-ray, this is Guillermo Del Toro's favorite movie.

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Immortan Joe

First appearance: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Cars, explosions, more cars, more explosions in a post apocalyptic setting. The fourth Mad Max story. Probably my most anticipated movie for 2015, a year that sees a new Star Wars flick getting released.

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Grant Grant

First appearance: Slither (2006)

Small town America is forced to deal with an alien parasite wreaking havoc. Lucky for them Police Chief Bill Pardy is on the case!
People forgot to go see this in theatres which is a shame since it was a tonne of fun.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

First appearance: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988)

Yeah I know she'd been around longer than 1988, but I'm only focusing on movies here and that's when her movie came out.
Elvira quit's her job, and inherits a house and other things so she moves to a small New England town where her Great Uncle (she didn't even know she had a GOOD uncle) tries to buy a certain book she inherited from her Great Aunt (she didn't even know she had a GOOD aunt) who turns out to be a witch and the book to be a powerful book of spells.

Willie Higgins

First appearance: WolfCop (2014)

It's not unusual for alcoholic cop Lou Garou to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, but lately things have taken a strange turn. Turns out he might be a werewolf. An alcoholic werewolf. An alcoholic werewolf who's also an officer of the law. Can Lou meld all the aspects in his life a be a better man? Better wolf man? And what does town-weird-oh Willie know about what's actually happening?
Who can say....

Sgt. Tina Walsh

First appearance: WolfCop (2014)

It's not unusual for alcoholic cop Lou Garou to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, but lately things have taken a strange turn. Turns out he might be a werewolf. An alcoholic werewolf. What will his partner and oldest friend Tina Walsh think of all this?
Who can say....

Buffy St. John

First appearance: April Fool's Day (1986)

Eight friends gather at a B&B on an island to celebrate their last year at school. Each of them has a secret they've been hiding from each other. Also one of them is a murderer. I bet you can't guess which one! Yeah, I know. It's Buffy. But is it? Not everything at the B&B is what it seems! Or is it?
An entertaining slasher flick from the golden age of slasher flicks. Not as bloody as some it's more about the suspense. It's fun.
Look, just go see it.

Possessed miners on Mars

First Appearance: John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars (2001)

A couple of police officers on Mars need to transport a criminal to a remote mining settlement. When they get there it turns out all the miners have been possessed by Martian ghosts. A siege ensues.
This movie is as close as you can get to being a Western as possible with out actually having it set in the old west, using horses or having the heroes fight "injuns." Still wondering when John Carpenter's just going to make that Western he seems to want to make.
Also of note it features a score by John Carpenter (on synthesizer) and a bunch of heavy metal guitarits, including Robin Finck, Steve Vai and Buckethead, and the rest of Anthrax.

Friday, March 27, 2015

Fung Weng Wu Chi

First appearance: Master of the Flying Guillotine (1976)

Sequel to One-Armed Boxer. In this one the master of the two Tibetan Lamas killed by the One–armed Boxer in the previous movie stalks OAB to a tournament. He kills a bunch of guys with is flying guillotine. Lots of Kung-Fu shenanigans ensue. Also features an Indian Yogi with extendable arms!

Dave Sheldon (Winterbeast)

First appearance: Winterbeast (1991)

Some forest rangers stumble upon some kind of nefarious lodge owner who's some how summoning monsters or something? I'm not really sure what's happening in this movie. It was shot over sixteen years on various formats and includes a bunch of randomly inserted stop motion monster attacks. characters facial hair changes between shots due to the length of time it took to film the movie. Locations change during conversations where characters aren't moving. It definitely falls into the category of "It Must Be Seen To Be Believed!"

Friday, March 13, 2015

Jason X

First appearance: Jason X (2001)

Some time in the future a bunch of teens on a school trip to earth find the frozen body of notorious serial killer Jason Voorhees. They bring him back aboard their space ship to get extra credit on their report about infamous 20th century serial killers or something. Eventually Jason wakes up and does what Jason tends to do. At least until a robot shoots him a bunch of times.
But then a computer decides to put him back together. Unleashing Jason X!

Can you believe it took TEN movies to get Jason Voorhees into outer space? Even stranger can you believe David Cronenberg is in this?!

Not the worst of the Friday the 13ths but also not the best.

Thursday, March 12, 2015

Mary Mason

First appearance: American Mary (2012)

Mary Mason is a med student training to be a surgeon but can't quite pay the bills. She tries to get a job at a strip club only to be drawn into the weird and lucrative world of Underground black market EXTREME body modification! Horror and madness ensue!

Mr. Babadook

First appearance: The Babadook (2014)

Amelia's having a hard time raising her son, born the same day her husband died. Her son's kinda weird and likes making weapons to defend her from monsters. One night her son asks if he can choose the storybook for bedtime reading and hands his mom a mysterious red pop-up book called MR. BABADOOK. She has no idea where the book came from and it's creepy. Really creepy.
suddenly mysterious things start happening around the house and her son blames The Babadook.
Things get worse from there.
Where did the book come from? Is there a way to stop The Babadook?

The movie's got a reputation of being the scariest movie ever, but it may not be the movie you're expecting. It's really good, but I don't think I'd call it scary.

Monday, March 2, 2015

What is the Void?

First appearance: The Void (2016?)

There's a movie being made called "The Void" from the guys who made "Manborg."
The difference between "Manborg" and "The Void" is "The Void" is going to be terrifying. You can help make the Void even more terrifying by donating some money so they can make more monsters for the movie. Check out their Indie-Go-Go campaign, and give generously. The world needs more Terrifying Monster movies. While I know the guys making the movie, I am not involved personally and only wish to see them accomplish this crazy flick.

Thursday, February 26, 2015

Michael

First appearance: Burial Ground (1980)

An archeologist does something somewhere while digging and then there's zombies. Three other couples, one of which brings their creepy "Kid", Michael (played by then 26-year-old Peter Bark) to the house the archeologist stayed and they get attacked by the zombies. Supposedly there's some kinda prophesy foretelling this or something.

WEIRD Italian zombie flick everyone should see at least once. You will never forget Michael, no matter how hard you try.

Friday, February 13, 2015

Roy Burns

First appearance: Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)

A few years after Tommy Jarvis "killed" Jason Voorhees he finds himself committed to a halfway house for troubled teens. Shortly after his arrival people start dying. Does Jason Live? Is Tommy nuts? Is it one of the other troubled teens? Could it be the father of that one kid who got killed by one of the other troubled teens?
The first Friday the 13th to not take place at Camp Crystal Lake. Also the one with the highest body count up to that point and the most nudity. Also my least favorite of the series.

Happy Birthday John Carpenter!

Today's the birthday of one of my favorite directors. In tribute, here's all the Monstars I did inspired by his films in one handy image.

Monday, January 5, 2015

Vladislav, Viago, Petyr and Deacon

First appearance: What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
An excellent documentary about a group of Vampires sharing a flat in New Zealand.
One of my favourite movies from 2014.
I know I've posted Viago before but I really wanted to make sure his flatmates were represented.
