Munchie

First appearance: Munchie (1992)

Ever wish you had magical friend who sounded like Dom Delouise? This might just change your mind! Even though it's often packaged with similarly titled MUNCHIES, this movie has nothing in common with it other than weird puppet characters.
Also Munchie never flies around on a pizza in the movie.

Decapitron

First appearance: Puppet Master IV: The Demon (1993)

Back in the present (the present as of 1993), A talented A.I. researcher named Rick is working as a care taker for the Bodega Bay Hotel, while also doing research on A.I. He finds Toulon's puppets in their travelling case in the wall where Toulon hid them after committing suicide in the late 40's to prevent nazi spys from attaining his secrets. Meanwhile, in hell, a demon named Sutekh, decides that he hates how people keep animating things so he mails some animated dolls to Rick and some of his co-researchers to kill them.
Toulon's puppets end up rebuilding an unfinished puppet called Decapitron. Sutekh's animated dolls (known as Totems) end up at Bodega Bay they all fight.

Six Shooter

First Appearance: Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge

Hey remember how Andre Toulon was a maniac who designed puppets to murder people and had a serum made of human brains that brought them to life? Remember how he killed himself in that hotel in Bodega Bay, California in 1939 to prevent Nazis from getting his secrets? Well it turns out that was all a big misunderstanding. What happened was in 1941 Berlin nazis killed Toulon's wife while trying to force him to give up the secrets to how he animated his puppets so they could use it to reanimate their dead in order to have an unkillable army. Toulon uses his puppets to get revenge!

Torch

First appearance: Puppet Master II (1990)

Toulon's Puppets are back! killing more folks in an attempt to resurrect their creator Andre Toulon!
Turns out Toulon's more than likely an evil guy, what with his bringing horrifying puppets to life through the use of some kind of serum that requires human brains to work.

Pennywise The Dancing Clown

First appearance: 1990

A bunch of kids run afoul of a giant spider from outer space (possibly from another dimension) who wakes up every 27 years to feed. The space monster takes on the forms of things it's victims are scared of. This doesn't stop the kids from defeating the spider monster.
Unfortunately for the kids they didn't kill the space monster so IT comes back 27 years later to annoy the now adults to death.
90s TV Miniseries Based on a Stephen King novel and for some reason very popular even though the monster is more irritating than frightening.

Jason Voorhees (again)

First appearance (looking like this): Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Jason gets blown up and then it turns out he's actually some kind of worm thing that possesses people or something. Also Jason's mom visited a bunch of other horror movie locations when Jason was growing up? (There's a copy of the Noturum De Montos, a mandarin dagger, the box fluffy from creepshow was in...) Yet another adventure of Jason Voorhees that doesn't take place at Camp Crystal Lake.

Jake

First appearance: Twin Dragon Encounter (1986)

Unfortunately since I haven't seen Twin Dragon Encounter I'm not sure what it was about. However I did see the sequel "Dragon Hunt." That one was about Jake gathering a bunch of mercenaries on an island and making them fight and hopefully kill the Mcnamara brothers (Canada's premier twin martial artists) to get revenge for whatever happened in the previous movie. Probably something to do with losing his hand since the movie starts with that.

Jake's army consists of some trappers, a beast master, a guy too stupid to feel pain, some ninjas and a bunch of paramilitary guys. Violence ensues!

Unfortunately I couldn't find a trailer for this slice of Maple Syrup Martial Madness.

Dave Sheldon (Winterbeast)

First appearance: Winterbeast (1991)

Some forest rangers stumble upon some kind of nefarious lodge owner who's some how summoning monsters or something? I'm not really sure what's happening in this movie. It was shot over sixteen years on various formats and includes a bunch of randomly inserted stop motion monster attacks. characters facial hair changes between shots due to the length of time it took to film the movie. Locations change during conversations where characters aren't moving. It definitely falls into the category of "It Must Be Seen To Be Believed!"

Jason X

First appearance: Jason X (2001)

Some time in the future a bunch of teens on a school trip to earth find the frozen body of notorious serial killer Jason Voorhees. They bring him back aboard their space ship to get extra credit on their report about infamous 20th century serial killers or something. Eventually Jason wakes up and does what Jason tends to do. At least until a robot shoots him a bunch of times.
But then a computer decides to put him back together. Unleashing Jason X!

Can you believe it took TEN movies to get Jason Voorhees into outer space? Even stranger can you believe David Cronenberg is in this?!

Not the worst of the Friday the 13ths but also not the best.

Dr. Peyton Westlake

First appearance: Darkman (1990)
Scientist Dr. Peyton Westlake seeks vengence after being blown up by vicious criminal and amateur finger collector Robert G. Durrant. Unfortunately being blown up has resulted in Dr. Westlake being hideously scarred and losing the ability to feel pain.
Fortunately Dr. Westlake was working on a formula for artificial skin allowing him to make realistic looking masks to disguise himself as anyone. He uses his new found abilities to destroy Durrant's gang and hunt down the man who hired Durrant to blow him up!
This is Sam Raimi's tribute to weird pulpy comic books and the old Universal Monsters.

Ricky Coogin

First appearance: Freaked (a.k.a. Hideous Mutant Freekz, 1993)

On his way to help the E.E.S. (Everything Except Shoes) Corporation promote Zygrot-24, Ricky Coogin and his pal Ernie cross paths with a group of anti-Zygrot-24 protestors lead by the attractive environmentalist, Julie.  Having tricked Julie into believing they are environmentalists too, on their way to protest Zygrot they head into the wilds of Santa Flan, where a side trip to Elija C. Skruggs' Freekland changes their lives. Mutations and mutilations ensue!

The creature designs in this are hilarious. Mr. T plays a Bearded Lady. Keanu Reeves plays a dog!
Not really a movie for everyone, most people probably won't really get the appeal to it. It's weird, juvenile and occasionally a little gross, but with a message: "Even if you don't like macaroons, you should probably eat one if everyone else is doing it."

I actually remember going to see Darkman on its opening night and seeing posters and banners al over the theatre announcing the release of Hideous Mutant Freekz. My friends and I decided to make sure we could get to the theatre to see HMF when it came out. Sadly it never did. A few years went by and I saw a videotape at the local Videoflix called "Freaked" and thought to myself "That looks kinda familiar." Since there weren't any other horror flicks new that week I gave it a shot. Much to my surprise it turned out to be Hideous Mutant Freekz. Turns out the studio was scared about how weird the movie was so they pulled it's theatrical release re-named it and eventually dumped it onto VHS.

Zap Rowsdower

First appearance: The Final Sacrifice (1990)

A young man, Troy, continues his father's quest to discover the lost city of Xiox! On the run from hooded cult members, he takes refuge in the back of a crummy pick up truck. The truck belongs to the impressively named Zap Rowsdower, a down on his luck former cult member (spoiler, sorry). Together this team sets out to avenge the death Troy's father, find the lost city of Xiox, redeem Zap Rowsdower, and save the world?

This weird, no budget Canadian adventure film received attention from the fantastic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 exposing the world to the incredible mulleted hero Zap! I'd love to see the movie un"riffed" just for fun. Normally I'd include the trailer for the movie with this little write up, unfortunately the movie isn't that popular or something so I can't find a trailer. I highly recommend you check out the MST3K episode, I think its one of their best.
